Work Christmas Party Outfits 2026: What to Wear to the Office Holiday Party
Every December the same question comes round: what do you wear to the work Christmas party? It's a party, so you want to look like you're there to enjoy it. But it's also work, and your manager will be standing next to you at the bar.
Below is everything that helps, from team lunches and drinks in the meeting room to the occasional black-tie dinner, plus how to get from your desk to the party without going home first.
Start with three questions. Where is it, when is it, and what does the invitation say?
Where matters most. A long lunch in a brasserie, mulled wine in the office and dinner at a hotel are three completely different evenings. Time comes next: softer colors and lighter fabrics during the day, velvet and silk once it's dark. And if there's a dress code, follow it. If there isn't, go one step dressier than a normal day at the office, but stop well short of an evening gown.
Christmas invitations are full of words that sound helpful and aren't. Here's roughly how we'd read them.
"Festive" or "holiday attire" usually means your normal work clothes plus one thing that feels like December. Velvet, a satin skirt, a red lip. "Smart casual" means no suit, but no hoodie either. "Cocktail" is a dress or a dressy two-piece somewhere between the knee and mid-calf. "Black tie" at a work party is rare, but when it happens, treat it like a gala.
Still unsure? Ask. Whoever is organizing will be glad someone actually read the invitation, and a colleague who went last year can tell you whether people really dressed up.
This is the dress code most work parties end up with, even when nobody says so. Tailored trousers or a midi skirt, a silk blouse or a fine knit, and a blazer if you want more structure. Heeled loafers or ankle boots will carry you through the evening.
We'd keep most of the outfit quiet (ivory, camel, grey) and let one thing be festive. Burgundy and forest green do that better than Christmas red. A matching wool set in bordeaux is the easy option: perfectly fine for the office, and it already looks like December.

“I've only achieved to get the skirt, because the jacket was out of stock. I love how the material adapts to the shape of my body. It's very elegant and good quality. If the jacket is restocked, I woud love to complete the two piece!”
— Sofia C., verified buyer
“The fit and the quality is perfect! I really love the high quality natural fabrics.”

Smart casual gives you a bit more room to play. A midi dress with knee-high boots. Wide-leg trousers and a draped satin top. Or our favorite, a satin slip skirt with a soft cashmere sweater tucked in at the front, which looks just as right at 3 p.m. as at 9.

A wool blazer helps if the venue turns out to be fancier than expected. Wear it with the matching trousers during the day and over a silk top later on.

Cocktail is where people tend to overdo it. It's still a work party, so keep the sparkle to one piece. A jacket with a bit of shimmer, say, or a silk midi with nothing else shiny around it.
Deep red, emerald and navy look festive without shouting. Add pumps or strappy heels, a small clutch and earrings you won't fiddle with all night.

If your company books a hotel ballroom and writes "black tie" on the invitation, take them at their word. A long dress in velvet, satin or silk, classic colors, not much jewelry. We've written a whole guide to gala attire if you'd like more detail.

A casual party still deserves a bit of thought. A knit dress is the obvious answer, and a good one: comfortable for hours and still put together. Wide-leg trousers with a tucked-in blouse work too. It's December, so leave the cotton summer dresses where they are and reach for wool or a heavier knit. Then one festive touch. A red bag, a bit of metallic thread, a velvet bow in your hair.

★★★★★ What clients say about the Vanessa Knit Dress
“Absolutely beautiful. The rich color, the weight of the fabric, and how it heavily falls and contours the body - perfection.”

Chances are you'll go back to your desk afterwards, or at least sit for a very long time. A knit midi or a soft two-piece is ideal. Nothing tight at the waist; there's always dessert.
Oddly, this is the hardest one, because the room is the same as every other day. Wear what you'd wear to an important meeting and change one thing. Velvet instead of wool, a satin skirt, bigger earrings. You want to look like you made an effort, not like you've wandered in from a different party.
Here you can dress up a little. A belted red dress, a silk dress, a wool set with heels. Restaurants in December are always warmer than you expect, so pick something you'll be happy in once the jacket comes off.

If the night ends on a dance floor, think about that before you get dressed. Can you lift your arms? Can you still stand in those shoes at midnight? A cocktail dress or a sparkly two-piece is great, as long as the answer to both is yes.
If you'd rather not think about it at all, pick one of these.
Nobody talks about the coat, but it's December. You'll be standing outside waiting for a taxi, and it's the first thing anyone sees when you walk in. A long wool coat goes over pretty much everything, from a knit dress to a gown. Just check it's roomy enough not to squash a full skirt.

If the party starts straight after work, you don't need a second outfit. Wear a silk blouse and tailored trousers during the day and bring heels and a pair of earrings in your bag. Keep the blazer on for meetings, then drape it over your shoulders later. A red lipstick does the rest.
For hair and makeup, a little powder takes care of the end-of-day shine. A line of eyeliner or a touch of shimmer on the lids is plenty. Red or berry lipstick is the most festive thing you own. And if your hair has been up all day, take it down, or tie it back with a silk ribbon.
A small pouch in your desk drawer with lipstick, earrings and a brush makes the whole thing a ten-minute job.
In France, the working year usually ends with the pot de fin d'année: drinks in the office or the bistro round the corner, sometimes followed by a bigger soirée de Noël. Nobody goes home to change.
What Parisian women tend to do is keep their normal work outfit and swap one thing. A darker lipstick. A velvet skirt instead of the wool one. Pearls, on someone who wears no jewelry the rest of the year. It's festive, but you'd have to look twice to notice, and that's rather the point.

A few things are best left at home:
Beyond that, wear what feels like you. It's a party, after all.
December brings at least three invitations: work, family, New Year's Eve. You really don't need three new outfits. A velvet dress, a good wool set or a silk midi can handle all of them.
For the office, wear it with tights, low heels and small earrings. On Christmas Day, throw a cashmere cardigan over it. For New Year's Eve, lose the tights, find higher heels and finally wear the statement necklace you didn't dare wear to work. One piece, three evenings, and nothing in your wardrobe that only gets worn once.

Something festive yet professional. Choose polished silhouettes — a midi dress, blouse and trousers, or a refined jumpsuit — in elegant fabrics like silk or velvet. Avoid anything too revealing or overly casual.
Yes, but moderation is key. Opt for small sequin details or a single statement piece (like a skirt or top) balanced with classic basics.
Block heels, loafers, or elegant boots are practical choices. You can bring heels to change into at the venue.
If the dress code is casual and your jeans are dark, structured, and styled with dressier pieces — yes. Pair with a silk blouse and tailored blazer for balance.
Try draping it over a satin dress or pairing it with velvet trousers and a silk camisole. A blazer instantly adds polish while keeping the outfit office-appropriate.
